Challenge
As a firm serving startups and entrepreneurs, Cohn Legal needed a payment solution that met client expectations while reducing the operational complexity of managing payments across checks, cash, wires, and credit cards.
Based in Midtown Manhattan, Cohn Legal helps entrepreneurs, founders, and startups protect their brands through intellectual property and trademark law services. Founded by attorney Abe Cohn, the firm focuses on building transparent client relationships while delivering practical legal support for growing businesses.
Company: Cohn Legal PLLC
Reduced reliance on cash and checks
Gave startup clients flexible, self-service ways to pay online
Centralized payment tracking for better financial oversight
After managing the startup division of Howard M. Cohn & Associates, intellectual property and trademark attorney Abe Cohn launched Cohn Legal PLLC to help entrepreneurs, founders, and startups protect their brands and ideas.
“Each client represents a personal relationship to us,” Abe says. “We have a vested interest in helping each one of them follow their dreams.”
Transparency also plays an important role in the firm’s approach to billing and client relationships. Before beginning any engagement, Abe sets clear expectations around payments and billing and, whenever possible, gives clients flat-fee quotes in advance.
Prior to launching his firm, Abe already knew the kind of client experience he wanted to create. He wanted payments to be simple, flexible, and aligned with how clients already manage their businesses. Just as importantly, he wanted a system that would help keep firm finances organized as the practice grew. Having worked with LawPay at his previous practice, there was no question about whether he would use it at his new firm.
Abe takes a digital-first approach to payments in his law firm, encouraging clients to transition away from cash and checks.
“Managing payments with cash, check, wire transfer, and credit card means suddenly having four dimensions of payments, which makes it more difficult, more complicated, and more expensive for bookkeepers and accountants to manage,” says Abe.
Along with reducing internal payment complexity, LawPay also creates a more convenient experience for clients.
Along with Quick Bill and payment dashboards, LawPay’s custom payment pages are among Abe’s favorite features.
“Clients want to pay on their own schedule,” Abe says. “I can send a link to my unique payment page and tell them, ‘Hey, when you’re ready, click on this link and fill out the information.’ Then they can go in and enter their information themselves. That flexibility is something I think appeals to many of my clients.”
For Abe, one of the biggest benefits of LawPay is having a simpler way to track and manage firm finances.
Overall, Abe describes his experience with LawPay as “phenomenal”.
“I love it, honestly,” he says. “Everything is sensible and easy. I would recommend it to anybody.”
With LawPay, Cohn Legal streamlined digital payments, simplified financial management, and created more flexibility for both clients and staff.
